Events in 2010 It was a truly eventful year, 2010, with memorable events ... balls, battle re-enactments and also parts in film productions.
The most striking thing, yet again, is making acquaintance with interesting people, with equally wonderful (in most cases, home-made) uniforms, or dresses in the case of ladies and visiting some truly historic places, the re-enactments listed below:
Battle of Fredrikshald - 1660
18-20 June we, that is the Nerike Wermelands Caroleans (and A Royal Life Guard), took part in the re-enactment of the 1660 Battle of Fredrikshald, an episode of the Dano-Swedish war of 1658-60, during 19-20 June.
A truly great event, superbly organised by our gracious hosts, Fredriksten Artilleri Compagnie. The event took place at the magnificent Fredrikssten Fortress, in the small border town of Halden.
The town has seen quite a few attempts from the Swedish to take the fortress and advance into to Norway, but mostly unsuccessful. Even the Swedish warrior King, Charles XII died in a failed siege of the fortress in 1718 - so this is truly a historic place for the majority of Carolean re-enactors in Sweden.
Battle of Narva - 1704 13-15 August, some extremely hot and sunny days, with temperatures reaching beyond +40C, were spent in the (still) Russian influenced city of Narva.
A very small Swedish contingent faced up to the much larger numbers of Russian troops in the re-enactment of the 1704 battle of Narva. In the hot conditions it was very tough wearing layer upon layer of wool, but all in all a great experience and new places explored.
On the way home we enjoyed the summer pleasures in the beautiful Latvian capital of Riga.
The 300th anniversary of Ehrensvärd - Helsinki 24-26 September, were spent in a wonderfully sunny Helsinki, enjoying the last warm days of the year in the historical Fortress of Suomenlinna (Sveaborg).
Along with participants from different historical periods a historical camp was raised, battle exercises were demonstrated and a guard of honour formed at the beautiful grave of the Marshal and Constructor Augustin Ehrensvärd.
We even enjoyed a traditional Finnish Sauna, in one of the biggest saunas in the country, and also the required dip into the sea.
A very serene and pleasent event, wonderfully organised by Keimo Ahokanto and Co of the Nyland Regiment (historical group).
Battle of Narva - 1700 (19-21 November) 19-21 Nov, we returned to Narva to take part in the 310th anniversary of the greatest ever victory for a Swedish Army - The battle of Narva 1700. The difference in temperatures could not be starker from the August visit when we almost collapsed in the heat ... a difference of almost 40 degrees C.
The event turned out to be well-organised and attended with participants from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Estonia, Russia and Ukraine. Almost 200 men in contemporary uniforms took the stage to reconstruct the so historical battle. Amid snow and sleat both sides kept up the fire to light up the atmosphere at the Hermansborg Castle, almost a second home to all carolean re-enactors.
Some change from the "normal" for us Swedish, as we ended up winning and we were, for once, equally numbered. Thanks to all the organisers, Narva Muuseum, the various historical associations and all the new acquaintances made.
Thanks for the memories I would like to express my gratitude to certain people for making 2010 a truly great year in "historical time-travel".
